If variable loads are exerted upon a motor-driven piece of equipment, a variable frequency drive (VFD) or Variable speed drive (VSD) can make a significant difference in the amount of energy used. A VFD varies the speed of a connected motor by changeing the voltage supplied to the motor. It allows continuous processing of the speed control by converting from fixed frequency voltage to the continuous variable frequency. Depending on applications of VFD, motor speed is matched to the load. Properly programmed VFDs may save up to 40% of energy costs.

When to consider VFDs

VFDs save energy in a wide range of, but are most effective in machines that operate significantly below maximum speed for extended periods of time such as blowers, boilers, centifugal pumps, compressors and fans. If motors operate at constant speed, VFDs are less economical. In fact, many experts consider VFDs unecessary in constant speed operations. VFD drives may be optimized using various techniuqes, including trial and erro. Since sensors that can record voltage consumption of the motor are available and may be connected to most motors, it is possible to measure actual savings due to the addition of a VFD.

Prior to making a decision about the installation of a VFD it is important to check the compatibility and effectiveness of the device with a motor and to understand the benefits and costs of installation. Simple payback calculations may involve multiple components, such as the cost of VFD and its installation, energy savings, repairs, maintenance and downtime estimates (both of VFD and the equipment) and change in longevity of the equipment as result of installation of the VFD. The simple payback period varies from six months to five years, but is typically under a year.

Consult the manufacturer or facility engineer for detailed knowledge of VFD equipment operation and process requirements to ensure savings. Generally, manfactures will have VFD-selection software available to customers.

VFD’s may be used for a single motor or multiple motors. However, if a single VFD is used with multiple motors (less expensive arrangement), individual overload protection, such as thermal overloads are needed to protect each motor.
